Laid-back and low-key St. John has restaurants that accommodate its feel. Slip into a casual dress, slide on some sandals, or head out in shorts, and here you'll most likely feel right at home. The beautiful green surroundings and lack of glitz make St. John a casually-elegant place to dine, and the magic of the place is unequaled.
Cruz Bay
This is the place to come for a lively bar scene, which you'll find not soon after you step off the ferry. You will no doubt encounter Woody's right away, with its on-the-street location and a great place to people watch and stop for a drink. For a more sophisticated experience, there is Zozo's Ristorante at Gallows Point, which is great for sunset cocktails and dinner overlooking the harbor. Also on the elegant side is Asolare, located just north of town, serving Asian style cuisine from an old West Indian house.
Mongoose Junction, an interesting shopping center on the north end of town, is the setting for Paradiso, a popular bar and restaurant on the upper floor where you can eat indoors or out. In the same location, there is the also popular Mongoose Restaurant and Deli, popular with both locals and visitors. More unusual fare is served at the Sun Dog Café, also at Mongoose.
Elsewhere in town there is La Tapa, where you can sit on the street or head inside the quaint little restaurant.
Around the Island
Like other big resorts, the Westin Resort St. John offers a variety of eating styles on one property. There is Snorkel's, alongside the pool with an all-day bar and evening BBQ, or the Beach Café for casual breakfasts and dinners. The premier evening diner spot is Chloe and Bernard's, a hillside restaurant with beautiful views of the wonderfully landscaped property.
A surprisingly great place to eat, and about as casual as you can get, is Maho Bay Campgrounds. Cooked by resident chefs and some of the seasonal folks on the work programs, this food is about as good as it gets and at the right price. Beer and wine are also available, served by friendly folks, and you can eat amongst interesting people and friendly campers. You might even come upon one of the evening education programs.
Over at Coral Bay, there are a few places to check out. The most popular is Skinny Legs Bar & Restaurant, which attracts a lively bar crowd of sailors, visitors and locals. The food is casual, and there usually are sports on the TV. There is also Shipwreck Landing, which is as it sounds, wooden and near the water. They serve a variety of house drinks and casual cuisine.
