Marrakech's abundant cultural offerings have sparked a growing popularity among visitors from all over the world, who come to explore the city's Souks, museums and monuments during the day, and by night find themselves in some of the most popular clubs in the country.
Religious Landmarks & Museums
During your stay in Marrakech, be sure to visit some of its magnificent ancient mansions, mosques and opulent palaces. The 800 year old Koutoubia Mosque and the Mosque Ben Youssef near the Médersa Ben Youssef are two examples of beautiful ancient architecture. The Ben Youssef Mosque is so holy that non-Muslims are not permitted to enter. The same is true of the Zaouïa Sidi Bel Abbès, the grave site of Marrakech's patron saint. The Dar Si Said and the Musée de Marrakech were both constructed in the 19th century. There are also more modest but equally beautiful places, like the Maison Tiskiwin (Musée Bert Flint) riad, which showcases local artifacts that tell the history of the city. If you are interested in contemporary art, don’t forget to take a look at the oldest and most acclaimed gallery in Marrakech, the Matisse Art Gallery, located in the Gueliz district, to discover the creativity of present-day Moroccan artists by observing their unique painting and sculpting styles.
Theater and Cinema
Jemaâ El Fna square, the heart of the medina, is like its own little world. Immerse yourself in its unique atmosphere and watch the bustling crowds while you have a meal or drink in the evening. Visitors who enjoy cultural events can check out the Institut Francais in the Gueliz district. It hosts film showings, theater performances, dance shows and various exhibitions. Also stop by the Théâtre Royal in Gueliz, both for its architecture and the exhibits that are hosted there. If you want to stay in the medina, stop at the Fondation Culturelle Dar Bellarj, which promotes local Moroccan artists through different events and exhibits. The Dar Cherifa hosts concerts, readings and exhibitions. Your best bet if you'd like to catch a good movie is to check the programming at the French Institut, but the latest American blockbuster can be found at Colisée or Megarama, the newest cinema in Marrakech. If you like Bruce Lee movies and a quirky atmosphere, you can try the Mabrouka or the Cinema Eden, two old popular movie theaters.
Nightlife
In Marrakech, a specific class of venues, made of places encompassing at the same time a night club or a lounge club, a bar and a restaurant, is considered as a must to begin a trendy night. The Bo&Zin is perhaps the most famous among the celebrities passing through Marrakech, followed by Comptoir Darna and Palais Jad Mahal. Those who love a Latin beat can choose between the Afric’n Chic, La Casa or the Trio Latino. There is only one step between the Casino de Marrakech and the ThéâtrO, one of the most popular nightclubs in Marrakech. From the Marrakchi night classics like Le Diamant Noir to the more modern venues like Pacha Marrakech, this city has a hot spot for everyone.
Sports
The Jardins de la Ménara, with its famous pavilion, and the Jardins de la Ménara, are two ideal places for a stroll. The little jewel of Marrakech is the Jardin Majorelle & Musée d'Art Islamique, a wonderful botanical garden created by French painter Jacques Majorelle. But romantism isn't the only thing Marrakech’s gardens have to offer: modernity is an asset of the Cyber Park Arsat Moulay Abdeslam, which is equipped with Wi-Fi hotspots. The Palmeraie area encompasses three Golf courses, among them is the oldest in the country, the Royal Golf Club. A nice way to go to the Palmeraie from the medina is to ride a calash. This provides a nice tour in the medina and around the Remparts de Marrakech. As for tennis players, they will appreciate the Royal Tennis Club Marrakech. Finding a place to do some horse riding isn't a problem, Marrakech is full of equestrian clubs, such as Les Cavaliers De L’Atlas.
If you prefer to kick back and relax, bask in the sun around the swimming pools of La Plage Rouge or Nikki Beach, where DJs blend right into the setting. Of course if you'd rather hear bird songs than techno music, L’Oliveraie de Marigha will be a better option. Finally, Marrakech’s surroundings, at the bottom of the Atlas mountains, enjoy wonderful landscapes. Don’t hesitate to go the Vallée de l’Ourika, which is dotted with Berber villages like Setti Fatma. You could also organize a trip to the Parc National de Toubkal, where you can get great views of the surrounding natural beauty.
