Architecture and History

Both regions are a goldmine for architecture buffs. Whether you’re an expert or just fascinated by this region's incredible examples of Medieval and Gothic styles, you are sure to be impressed. The fortified medieval city of Provins is remarkable for its number of well-preserved buildings and monuments. Climb up Tour César (César's Tower) which is said to date back to Roman times, then visit Cathédrale Saint-Ayoul (Saint Ayoul Church). Other stunning Gothic cathedrals in the region include Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims in Reims, and Cathédrale Saint Etienne in Meaux.

What would a visit to France be without a touring a château ? The Château de Fontainebleau has an history as rich as its design, having hosted all the French Kings from Louis VI the Fat to Napoleon III. Its beautiful grounds and intricate mazes are a favorite with kids young and old. In Nemours, Château de Nemours dates to the 12th century and has been transformed into a free museum. The magnificent Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte outside Melun is a must see, and holds events such as fountain shows, candlelight visits, and open air theater showcases. The Château de Champs-sur-Marne, located on the Marne river near Bailly Romainvilliers, once played host to France's distinguished foreign guests and is now open to the public for self, guided, or audio tours.

The opportunities to experience France's rich cultural history in this region are endless. Be transported back to the Middle Ages in Provins, a medieval city with much of its fortifications, Les Remparts (Fortified Walls), still intact. There are numerous shows and displays that are sure to delight and entertain the whole family. Breathtaking equestrian displays awe spectators at "Arkhangaï, les Cavaliers des Steppes (Arkhangaï, horsemen of the Steppes)." A 13th century legend is brought to life with feats of chivalry and honor at "La Légende des Chevaliers (The Legend of the Knights)." "Les Aigles des Remparts (The Eagles of the Remparts)" features eagles, falcons, horses, wolves and more in this fantastic display of man and beast.

Art

Picturesque fields and pleasant villages make it easy to understand why the Impressionist movement has its roots here. The quaint "artists" village of Barbizon was once homes to Théodore Rousseau and Jean-François Millet, leaders of the "naturalist" movement of the 19th century. Take a stroll through town and visit the numerous galleries and shops, and stop in to Auberge Ganne - Musée Départemental de l'école de Barbizon, an inn turned museum that was once host to many of the movements well known artists. The town of Moret-sur-Loing was once home to famous Impressionist painter Alfred Sisley, friend and contemporary of Monet and Renoir. Learn about his life and works at Point Sisley.

Dancing/Music/Wineries

Champagne!

The main draw of this region is, of course, the numerous wineries and fantastic bubbly produced in Champagne. Moët & Chandon and Champagne Mumm are two of the most famous, both offering guided tours in French and English. Champagne Krug is regarded by connoisseurs as one the finest in the world, so don't miss your chance for a first class tasting. Take trip back in time at Champagne Taittinger, offering tours of their cellars dating back to the 13th century when they were used by the Saint Nicaise Abbey monks to store wine.

The French countryside comes alive during the summer, with events and festivals taking advantage of sunny days and warm evenings. In Provins, during the Fête Médiévale (Medieval Festival), you can experience for yourself this town's medieval heritage with knights on horseback, jesters, food stands and crafts tables. If you miss the medieval festival in June, check out the Fête de la Moisson (Farmers Festival) in August, which pays homage to the city's rural past, with decorated horse and cattle drawn carts, music and folk dancing. At the Fête du Brie (Brie Cheese Festival), the town of Melun celebrates its history and the the delicate, delicious cheese for which it is famous. For a more contemporary kick, enjoy world class jazz and famous names at the internationally acclaimed Django Reinhardt Festival in Samois-sur-Seine.

Guinguettes, often depicted in impressionist paintings, are a type of all day, outdoor ball featuring music, dancing, and food. All the rage in the 19th century, they have experienced a revival in recent years, and have become once again popular with people of all ages. At Le Canotier located in Précy-Sur-Marne, you’ll enjoy a full afternoon dancing and dining alongside the Marne river. The Le Port aux Perches in Silly-la-Poterie bording the Ourcq canal is another great choice for experiencing this fun tradition.
