Saudi Arabia’s capital of Riyadh is a city of rigid religious and social norms, of searing temperatures and unbending laws, of ancient traditions and ultra-modern infrastructure. Keeping these factors in mind, it is easy to see why it is best that one spare a thought to accommodations if visiting the city. Although tourism is far from a booming industry (the government does not see the need to promote foreign visits, given the strict social protocol that it prefers to maintain, and the lack of much dependence on any economic ventures other than oil), Riyadh does see a large number of visitors each year, and offers accommodations to suit a variety of needs and budgets. Spread across its numerous districts are several swanky five-star hotels, dingy motels, and modest apartments, some of which cater to the most prestigious of guests, and others which are affordable to practically anyone. Almost all of these establishments are air-conditioned, in the scorching temperatures of the Arabian Peninsula, this is more of a necessity than a luxury, especially for travelers who are not used to such searing heat (the highest temperatures are recorded in the summer, between the months of May and September–it is best to visit between November and April).

Five-Star Hotels:

For those who prefer to live in the lap of luxury (and have the money to pay for it), it is best to make reservations at one of Riyadh’s several five-star hotels, most of which are within the vicinity of King Khaled International Airport. All of them offer facilities such as swimming pools, spas, restaurants, tennis/squash courts, bowling alleys, and much more. Riyadh Intercontinental Hotel is the best bet for the ultimate five-star experience – besides the usual amenities, it offers a 9-hole golf course, and most members of the staff are multi-lingual. Other posh hotels include the Sahara Almatar Hotel at Al-Faisaliyah and Al Riyadh Sheraton.

Four-Star Hotels:

Among the four-star hotels, those belonging to international chains, such as the Riyadh Marriott and the Four Seasons are the most popular. They tend, however, to be slightly more expensive than other establishments of the same ranking, given their respective reputations. Other hotels that fall in this category include the Al-Mutlaq, conveniently located in the midst of the King Abdul Aziz District. The districts of Al-Malaz and Olaya are also prominent commercial centers, and are home to several four-stars.

Three-Star Hotels:

For those traveling on a smaller budget, three-star hotels in Riyadh are a good bet offering basic comforts at lower prices. The most accessible areas in Riyadh, like the districts of Sulamaniyah and Al Batha’a, are far from lacking in such hotels, which have the advantage of being located within close proximity of markets and public transport stations. Famous for their in-house restaurants and trademark Middle-Eastern hospitality are the hotels of Almusafer, Al Muraba and Aba-al-Khail.

Two-Star Hotels:

You can find these in every district of Riyadh. They are the best option for the cash-strapped traveler, and apart from the basic amenities, they offer an insight into the average local lifestyle and culture. Hotels like Asia, Al Watan and Al Mamorah Hotel provide accommodation near places of interest without burning a hole in one's pocket.

Furnished Service Apartments:

If a long stay in the city is on the agenda, renting a furnished service apartment instead of a hotel room is a better option. Posh flats, however, can cost almost as much as a hotel - Al Akhliya, for instance, offers amenities including laundry service, an in-house restaurant, car-rental services, swimming pool, children’s playground, and private car park. Slightly cheaper options include Al-Fursaan Furnished Flats or Al-Khelawi Furnished Apartments.
