This land was once owned by a merchant prince, Cicero Hunt Lewis, who was married to Clementine Couch, the daughter of Captain John Heard Couch. (It's pronounced "cooch"; do not let a local hear you say "couch," like sofa.) Captain Couch owned most of downtown's northwest quadrant in the 1800s. In 1971, the community created Couch Park. Students of the nearby Metropolitan Learning Center contributed to the design work and people of Portland helped to build the city park.
