One of Perth's major sporting events, the Hopman Cup, brings together nine leading international tennis teams for a few days of fun and competition. Each country selects one male and one female to play in a series of singles and mixed doubles matches. Celebrity players who have competed in the cup include Monica Seles, Lleyton Hewitt and Arantxa Sanchez Vicario. The Hopman Cup, the first tournament on the International Tennis Federation's calendar, started in 1988. The championship was named after Harry Hopman, an Australian with 15 Davis Cup victories to his name.
