For 120 kilometres, these expert canoeists race for the finish. This is an event that began in 1951 and was a 24-hour daily race for several years until they realized it was too dangerous to travel these waters at night. Since then, the event has been broken into three sections, and only daylight hours are allowed. The put-in is at Camp Drift (by Pietermaritzburg) and the finish is at the Blue Lagoon in Durban. The race usually takes place on a weekend near the end of January. Call ahead for race progress if you wish to see the finish. The admission is free.
