Coming approximately 70 days after Eid el-Fitr, the 'Great Feast' marks the prophet Ibraham's sacrifice of a sheep instead of his son, Ismael. Appropriately, Muslims slaughter a sheep or, if a person can afford it, a cow. The meat is then divided with a share going to the poor. This is a festive, family affair where peace and goodwill reign over the city. Most businesses are shut for four days and inter-city transportation is booked solid weeks in advance. Eid el-Adha dates depend on the Islamic lunar calendar.
