This festival marks Jewish fighters, the Maccabees, reclaiming the temple and defeating King Antiochus of Greece. Upon entering the temple, there was only enough oil left to keep the menorah (a branched candelabrum) burning for one day. A miracle was seen in the continued burning of the lamp; now Chanukah is marked by families lighting the menorah each night in their homes. A walk through the alleys of Mea Shearim or Nahlaot is recommended after candle-lighting time.
