The well-known harp, four-string guitar and maracas are just a few of the musical instruments that abound in this country. In the Andean region, the bow instruments are also much appreciated, and the violin enjoys a preference among farmers. In 1988, a group of enterprising musicians inaugurated the Festival of the Violin of the Andes, which has its home in the town of Tovar, seventy-five kilometers to the south of Merida. This festival, celebrated in December, quickly received well-deserved prestige and is attended by performers from different parts of the country, especially the states of Merida, Tachira, Trujillo and the Andean region of Lara.
