Celebrated mainly by Hindus from Southern India, Ponggal is a time of thanksgiving for a successful harvest. Hindus cook ponggal - a sweet preparation of rice - in new pots and allow it to boil over, symbolising prosperity. Singapore's Hindu temples fill with worshippers who offer prayers to the gods together with rice, vegetables, sugar cane and spices, which are then eaten by devotees to cleanse themselves of their sins. Visitors are welcome to witness the festival. Temple etiquette requires visitors to be dressed appropriately and shoes to be removed at the entrance.
