Originally Junkanoo was held during Christmas when the slaves were freed for three days. To celebrate, the freed slaves took up their handmade instruments and wearing masks, danced through the streets. This Junior Junkanoo gives young Bahamian school children a chance to show off their talent as they compete for first place in the parade. More than a dozen primary and secondary schools participate, and most of the children have designed and created the costumes themselves. The winner receives prizes and an invitation to join the adults in the main parade that happens in December.
