Jan Palach was a young Czech student who killed himself in protest against the 1969 invasion of the Soviets into the Czech Republic. Held up as a national hero who gave his life for his country, Palach is honored on this day every year, when citizens and visitors to the city visit his grave to light candles, bring flowers, and consider the young man's lasting legacy. On this day each January, many Prague citizens visit the Olsansky Cemetery, or the Memorial to Victims of Communism in Wenceslas Square. No admission fee.
