The Costa Ricans' celebratory fervor continues unabated into the new year. By tradition on New Year's Day (a national holiday), locals clean house, sweeping out dust, cobwebs and any ill feeling or bad luck from end to end. Street parties also mark the occasion with music, dancing, food and drink, with festivities centering downtown and in the Zapote district. Fireworks light up the city at night, launched by both official pyrotechnicians and unofficial pyromaniacs.
