Guatemalans celebrate this national holiday like they celebrate all their holidays, with vibrant music, colorful costumes, plenty of boj (cane alcohol) and fireworks. Witness the festive (but menacing) "toritos," men in firecracker-encrusted cages who bang around in crowds of people. Locals wear new clothes for good fortune in the coming year. Festivities center around the Plaza Mayor, but street parties break out citywide. The nearby town of Antigua Guatemala also hosts energetic New Year's celebrations. Admission to most events is free.
