Among the numerous traditional events that are part of Christmas celebrations in Merida, the place of honor must go to the Misas de Aguinaldo (here it should be stated that the term aguinaldo does not mean a tip or a gift, as in other Spanish speaking countries, rather it refers to Christmas songs or carols). From December 16-24, these special masses are celebrated in various parts of the State, with musicians from all over the region accompanying the aguinaldos. These masses take place from 4a to 6a, and the musical groups each take a turn so that everyone gets a chance to participate in the ritual.
