The celebrations that take place during the Christmas season are especially rich and varied, in this traditional and highly religious state of Mérida. One strongly held tradition is that each family prepares its own nativity scene, using traditional craft elements from around the region; the best of these works take part in exhibitions and contests. Other typical events are the celebration of the "Paradura del Niño" (the Walking Jesus) and the "Robo del Niño" (the Stolen Child), both dating back to Spanish colonial times, as do the Misas de Aguinaldo (Carol Masses). Houses as well are decorated with abundance, as are the dining tables laden during this period.
