A bit of a trek from Guatemala City (roughly 138 miles east; call it a pilgrimage), the border town of Esquipulas hosts one of the largest religious festivals in Central America. Mixing Christian and Mayan rituals, the week-long festival culminates on January 15 annually. More than 100,000 pilgrims come to pray before the Black Christ, carved from dark wood and enshrined in the Basilica de Esquipulas. Lines and waits are long. Outside, eat traditional foods and witness the astounding, colorful congregation of native costume and culture. Hotel reservations must be made far in advance.
