New Year's Day is conventionally viewed as a rest day by most local residents or as a rare opportunity for an out-of-town vacation. Visitors arriving in Penang during the first week of the New Year get a special visual treat as part of the authorities' tireless efforts to raise standards of tourism. They are greeted by a traditional welcome troupe in ethnic Malay, Indian and Chinese costumes amidst a backdrop of traditional ethnic music. Garlands are laid on the visitors who are also invited to sample staple local drinks. Revelers gather in Gurney Drive to usher in the new year: an event not to be missed.
