Run by the Christchurch Civic Music Council, this is New Zealand's most prestigious and well-established music performance competition. The heats and semi-finals are held in December of each year, where a quality field of aspiring young talent is whittled down to three finalists, who then compete the following March with the backing of the Christchurch Symphony. The standard is extremely high and the finals are always a great occasion. The competition alternates between piano and orchestral instruments according to the year.
