The people of Manila usher in the New Year with a bang, literally! The noise barrage from firecrackers and fireworks begins on New Years Eve and builds up to a deafening crescendo around midnight. The noise, based on Chinese belief, is supposed to drive off evil spirits and bring in good luck. There are parties everywhere (including the streets in some places), which can go on till daybreak. New Year's Day itself is often used for recovering from the revelry of the night before.
