To catch the best of celebrations, drive to Kalibo, two hours from Boracay. Here, the whole town erupts in frenzied festivities, with neighborhood groups vying with each other as they parade around town. Participants sport spectacular costumes and blackened faces. Ati-Atihan is held to honor the Infant Jesus, the town's patron, and commemorate a 13th century treaty between native aborigines and Bornean chieftains (hence the elaborate costumes and blackened faces). Street parties with drinking, singing and dancing take place throughout this week-long celebration. Boracay celebrates Ati-Atihan as well, but on a smaller scale
