The theme of this mochi (or rice cake) event is the old island way. Held in Hakalau, the celebration features old-fashioned mochi-making through pounding. Villagers and other participants are also known to share stories of the rice plantation days of old. Fires to heat the rice are built early in the day. The event runs into the evening, with local-style meals available for as little as USD5 per person.
