Because Venezuela is a predominantly Catholic country, Christmas is a major holiday that merits several weeks of celebration. The festivities begin on December 16 with daily masses and continue through January 6, said to mark the arrival of the Three Wise Men. The nativity is celebrated by singing carols, called aguinaldos. Carolers traditionally wander from home to home, and you may be able to observe them if you visit a residential neighborhood. Most churches welcome visitors for midnight mass on Christmas eve. Be sure to wish fellow celebrants a Feliz Navidad! The tourist office can recommend a church to attend for mass.
