January 1st in Cape Town has been celebrated for more than 100 years for more than just New Years, but also as an independence day of sorts for colored South Africans. The day ushers in the Minstrel Carnival, a month-long celebration filled with boisterous dancing, music and parades. The event features songs and dances that originated in slave culture. Lavishly costumed troubadours perform in a raucous burlesque-style in a spectacle that is truly over the top. Street parties occur throughout the month, while the main competitions take place at the Greenpoint Stadium. Admission prices vary by event.
