Just west of Caracas, the town of Barquismeto hosts one of the country’s most colorful celebrations. A procession originates in the nearby town of Santa Rosa and revelers carry a statue of the Divine Shepherdess along the five kilometer parade route. This event has been a tradition in the region since the mid-1800s and the custom is going strong to this day. Spectators line the procession route and cheer on the parade of musicians and worshipers. Concerts and other celebrations centered at the Complejo Fairgrounds precede and follow the parade.
