The Vogel Gryff (eagle), Lion and Wild Man are the figures of the three Honorary Societies of Basel. The celebration, rife with mythological significance, is held every January and starts at 11a when the Wild Man floats down the Rhine to meet the Vogel Gryff and Lion at the Middle Rhine Bridge. The three figures parade and dance through the streets of the city. This custom has been practiced since 1838.
