This Islamic festival is celebrated by Shi'a Muslims around the world. Hosay runs for 4 days with dates determined by the Islamic lunar calendar. It commemorates the martrydom of the Prophet Mohammed's grandsons Hassan and Hussein at the Battle of Kerbala in Persia. Trinidad has been celebrating this as early as 1845. Beginning on Flag Night, the first procession takes place with hundreds of people parading through the streets carrying multi-colored flags. The next two nights include more processions of music and dance. On the fourth day, a daylight procession brings two crescent-shaped moons representing the two brothers to an open field where a special prayer is offered for the dead. The largest processions are held in St. James, a suburb of Port of Spain.
