In the hills west of Portland, where the elite have lived since the 1880s, sits the former mansion of William MacMaster, a financier and businessman who made his fortune in an economic boom in the last part of the 19th Century. His house, now a classic bed and breakfast, still sits high above the city next to Washington Park. Built in 1886, the huge, Queen Anne-style mansion has seven guest rooms and several other common rooms or showpiece rooms. One of 14 registered historical landmarks in the area, the house is located only five minutes uphill from downtown.
